And then it says something like 'You are currently receiving notifications for this item because you own it'.
What does this all mean?

It will make it so you no longer get notifications when people comment on it.

Unfollow means, you will no longer receive the follow up comments/like from other person/people on that specific status/pic or whatever you had commented or liked.
