How good of quality photos do gopro cameras take? - Extreme - 12-10-2012 12:15 PM

I've liked the page on facebook and all of their photos of the day are simply stunning... In fact, they look like the kinds of photos that a way more expensive camera would take (like a 600-1000 dollar camera). I'm just wondering, are these photos so good as the product of the camera, or as the product of some really good editing?

Basically, are the gopro photos typically of the quality of a 500-1000 dollar camera (as they appear to be from the photos of the day), or are they usually more the quality of a 100-200 dollar camera that you might see a teenage girl wave around thinking she's a photographer? And yes, I know gopro is only around 200 dollars. Does anyone have one out there that can let me know?

I want to buy a "legit" camera soon, and though I've been looking at the canon rebel t3i, gopro's cheap price, versatility (you can take it like... anywhere) and seemingly stunning photos are making it rather attractive to me. I am a first time camera buyer and I really don't know anything about cameras, so please don't use too sophisticated of language in your answers. Thank you!
I thought that there was both a still-version of gopro and a video-version? No?

A GoPro is a video camera, so it is not going to take high quality stills. It can take stills, but they are not going to be great. For what it is, the GoPro, especially the newest version, is one of the best wearable cameras on the market. So if you want to mount a camera to your helmet, bike, kayak..., it will take great video. The stuff you see on the web site was shot with a Go Pro. If you want to shoot a movie and can hold the camera in your hand, the Go Pro is not the best choice.
