There are two ways you can message someone on Twitter. The first way is to simply place an '@' before their name (without a space) at the beginning of the message. For instance, to message me, you would start the message as @jasonwiener. The other way, to Direct Message, requires both you and the recipient to be 'following' each other. Direct messages are intended only for people who have confirmed themselves (although only in the loosest of terms) as friends.
