Can I start a home-based vegan bakery in California? - :D - 12-13-2012 05:52 AM

Is it legal? Are there requirements for oven and workspace?

All food sold in the US needs to be produced in a commercial kitchen. It's next to impossible to get a home kitchen certified.

There is currently a bill in the state congress that if it passes it will allow things like jams/jellies and some limited baking at home. I don't know the status of the law:

I read saw on twitter from GreerOC (just yesterday or a couple of days ago) that there is a commercial kitchen opening somewhere in OC that people can rent just for these small business.
- remember twitter is 160 characters so i don't have any details.

OR you can attempt to skirt the law, which will only work if you sell to private parties. It might be hard to take it professional if you start this way.
- my neighbor had a small gluten free cake business but she got caught by the health dept and closed.
- I purchased a gluten free cake from a friend of a friend a few weeks ago. The person had a full website and everything. I was surprised how "legit" it looked but I know it wasn't and just turned a blind eye.
