If I add a lot of friends on facebook for neighbors on an application game would I be putting my security at risk?

yes. If your friend circle includes total strangers, your security is at risk.
"Friend" only people you know or trusted friends of trusted friends from THE REAL WORLD.
Set your profile to the highest security levels "FRIENDS ONLY" and do not post your full birthdate, phone number, address or primary e-mail address.

Well, i am guilty of adding people i don't know for APPs, but what you CAN do, which is really neat is hide your information from certain people, even if they are your "friends" for example, if i add someone name Heather and i have no idea who she is, I can choose the option of Hiding my photos from Heather. So, if you're adding people for neighbors, which i admit is very tempting, just set your profile that way.
