i have sent a message to the provided number on my twitter account with the word start several times and have gotten nothing back on how to proceed maybe someone could help me.

As long as you went to Settings > Mobile and entered your cell number, you should be up and running. The text number in the USA is 40404. Try sending a text to that number and see if it shows up on your Twitter timeline. The only messages you should get from Twitter are Direct Message notifications.
