Do the applications on facebook that claim to let you know who is 'stalking' your profile actually work or is it a hoax?

No they are usually scams, and they go against Facebook's terms of use anyways, so they wouldn't be allowed on the site.

No, They actually spam people's chats and facebook walls.
Never trust them and make sure if a friend falls for one of them that you tell them to change their password to help fight the scam.
And it's not exactly seen to be a good act in the eyes of facebook staff, You could get your account taken away.

No, they're all hoaxes made to scam people. Facebook never holds that kind of information anywhere so any software/applications that says they can "retrieve" it for you is fake.
