If you could receive all you had paid into social security back from the government (and not have anymore deducted) in one lump sum but had to waive your rights to social security benefits, would you?

In a second. I put away less in my SEP account and it's worth twice what I will receive in Social Security (even during the recession). They are ripping us off. Poor people would be much better off with a nest egg that they are forced to contribute to and control themselves, and the Markets would be souring from such an influx of Capital.

In a heartbeat.
Then invest it in some nice 'blue chip' stocks and re-invest the dividends.
(General Electric closed at $13,68 today and is paying a dividend of $1.20/yr. Do the math and ask what bank can give you that kind of a rate of return.)

yes. social security has always been, since it's inception, a failed policy.
