On the left side of the homepage where all my apps are, beside a few there are numbers in parenthesis. It will say like;
Petville (8)
Farmville (2)
What does that mean?

I think these are notifications from within the games, letting you know you have something happening in the game.

It is the number of friends of yours who are also playig those games. For example petville is played by 8 ppl in ur friend list..
