Me and a friend have Just set up accounts and are having a competition to see who can get the most followers. Loser has to give all Facebook, Twitter passwords etc to the winner to do with as they wish.

That's fun really! If your purpose is just to win this competition, you should apply some twitter adder software, e.g. Tweet Whistle.
There are also tools to retweet other people's tweets, and thus be more or less social along with using automation, e.g. CoTweet and SocialOomph.
However, it the long run, I wouldn't advise using large scale automation, because you're running a risk of being banned. Even popular accounts well-established accounts are running this risk, please have a look here http://www.trafficgenerationcafe.com/twitter-account-ban/.
All in all, twitter is an excellent tool for social engagement. I'm a great fan of it, and I'm kind of disapprove of manipulating it. Still, again your competition in particular sounds fun to me. Please make sure to summarize the process and the results, publish at your blog (or elsewhere) and share it with me!

Getting followers on twitter can be hard, but if you follow some simple steps it doesn't have to be.
You have to:
1. Link Your Networking Accounts
2. Place Your Page Everywhere
3. Post Interesting Content
4. Follow Trends and Retweet Properly

Hello there!
I know a site where you can join to get tons of followers from real people.
I joined the site and within few days, lots of users followed me. It was really surprising because I never thought I could be followed by tons of them.
