A retweet is a way for you to see a tweet somebody wrote even if you do not follow that person.

Let's say you follow guy A, but do not follow guy B. Guy A follows guy B, so he retweets the very smart thing B wrote so everybody who follows A can see it.

You should see a retweet with the original name of the poster, with a little recycle sign after it and the name of the retweeter. IE:

Chris Partin (recycle sign) by TopCow

Chris Partin is the original poster, who I do not follow. I follow TopCow, so as they retweet it, I can also read the message.

someone on twitter that you follow retweeted a tweet from their timeline. the retweet is someone you don't follow but because someone retweeted it, it will show up on your timeline. i hope that made sense o_o
