I need to start from scratch, how do you create an application that can be used on Facebook? Can you please tell me:
- what softwares/programs I need
- where can I get them from
- how do I use them
And any other important things I need to know.

all you need to do is log on to http://www.facebook.com and sign up, you dont need any specific software, just the internet.

Facebook Applications can be created by anyone.
Programming knowledge is required as basically you host your Facebook app and Facebook just links to you in a frame essentially.
It's really not software... just your brain's knowledge of php code/ my sql/ some html and have notepad.exe and hosting for your app.

You need to know the following:
* how web applications work
* knowlege and practice writing computer programs
* a programming language (or languages)
* the Facebook API
It's not an easy thing, and not something you can pick up in a few days. Most programmers out there, including Facebook app writers, have been doing it for years.
Writing a Facebook app is no different than writing apps for any other platform. It's not an overnight thing; it takes months of planning, development, testing, and debugging.
If you want to write the app yourself, you'll have to put your idea on hold for a few months while you get your feet wet. Otherwise, you need to find someone to write it for you.
Keep in mind that whoever writes your application for you will want something in return.

first you need to add the developers application, then you can go from there
what you need usually depends on what kind of app you want to make

Firstly, you must add the Facebook Developers Application. You only need basic knowledge of simple coding like PHP, HTML. You also need to host the App yourself. Facebook gives you adequate support although sometimes their advice gets confusing! And Facebook Connect is a pretty exciting thought for the future! Linking Facebook with your own Website! And, yes, anyone can create a Facebook App.
