When I'm away from Twitter for a few days, there's a backlog of Twitter messages. I don't feel I have to catch up on everything, but there are a few special people whose every Tweet is a gem. So is there a Twitter feature or a separate tool that would let me catch up with these select people?

If there are not many of them, then you could go to their individual profile pages so that you can see their tweets. However, if there are more of them then this would obviously take a bit of time.
If this is the case, then you could put them in a 'list' on Twitter. You have to individually add people to your list by clicking on the admin box on the right of their name. When you go to view the list, all other people you are following who are not on your list will be filtered out.
