Do I need a career change if I dislike Web 2.0? - eternus - 10-08-2012 02:46 PM

I have a computer science degree. My interest in technology has declined in the last few years. I'm one of the few people who never uses smartphones, texting, Facebook, Twitter, etc. I know YA is Web 2.0, but I mean in general. I find it to be just marketing, not technology. It's the sort of thing I tried to avoid in HS. To me tweeting is like wearing Abercombie & Fitch, it's cool because everyone else does it. I'm a subcontractor doing web development related stuff, but eventually the fact that I'm outdated in tech will be exposed. Should I quit doing anything IT related, and if so what should I do instead? I like math and science in general. I could've done engineering or something math related but I ended up in computer science.

This is an interesting question. I have been in the IT business for 20 years and am currently a programmer/system analyst. I do use Facebook, but I don't use Twitter and don't own a cell phone. Just because you don't use specific "hot" technologies doesn't mean you aren't interested in technology. To me Twitter is an interesting idea, I have tried it, I see where it could be valuable, but I don't have a need for it in my life. Being in the technology field I do feel that I need to understand the latest technologies, but that doesn't mean I have to always use them.

So you need to ask yourself if you are becoming dis-interested in technology in general, or is it just that there are specific things that you just don't have a need for.
