Really, I don't understand why everyone is so obsessed with it. It's like a cross pollination of facebook status and AIM away message?

I get your drift, its just like bebo.com, facebook and all those other social networking sites.
Who would want to post their life online?
If you really want to socialise use the phone,windows live messenger or even yahoo messenger.
Just because a few celebrities have a twitter account everyone wants to create one and become their friend, how sad.
