If everyone typed a bit too much, twitter's servers may get overloaded

I don't know why either. I think they should at least lengthen it. It is very hard to type with the 140 limit.

To save space in the database, by using a character limit you can reduce the allocated space for each message, and thus reduce the overall size of the database.
