it says "messages (1)" and when i actually get one "messages (2)."
any suggestions?

Maybe its just a glitch on your tumblr account, I had the same problem but on twitter. I would suggest you contact tumblr and tell them about it. I'm sure they'll be able to fix that nice and quick.
