I have a private twitter account, and there are a few people who I allowed to follow me, but I would no longer like to give them the opportunity to follow me. Is the only way to do this by blocking them?

Yup, block them from selecting from the drop down menu near the follower.

Yeah, you have to block them if you want them to unfollow you
