Because, according to Americans, any country where the government helps its people is socialist.

Canada has what you called a mixed economy, just like the U.S. does. It has socialist programs just like the U.S. does. Neither country has a pure capitalist economy nor a pure socialist economic system. I'm not entirely aware of the Canada's economic system. But they have minimum wage laws which determines wages by government legislation, , universal health care which is controlled by the state, and so are the national security and law enforcement agencies. One really big no no is that you have a centralized banking system just like the U.S.

There is a segment of the population that thinks that if you do anything as a group, besides war or national defense, that you're a socialist or a commie.

Canada may not be socialist in every sense, but in many ways you are. You are still behind the UK in the problem with UHC, but catching up very quickly. You can either take it as an insult or take a look around you and ask yourself why you are offended. And your high taxes are a problem--a big problem. A police department in the U.S. is at the city level--not the federal level. Forcing everyone to buy insurance for health and overriding the states' rights in the process is a problem. Let me rephrase everyone--I forgot some will get subsidies to NOT pay it and the rest of us will pick up the tab. If you bring up auto insurance, while I don't agree fully with a law forcing us to buy it--you don't have to drive. You don't have a choice on health insurance--you have a body no matter what.

Americans don't know any more what anything is, the Republicans keep telling us about this -ism and that -ism and they just think because that's what they hear that's whats correct.

Hopefully it will pass before we all turn into Palin-brained idiots.

No one I know thinks Canada is socialist. Most Americans love Canada. We do not want the socialized health care that Canada has because we do not like the high taxes that come with it. Every country that has a health care program like Canada's has those high taxes. We also worry about the speed in which treatment can be obtained. The US population is much bigger than Canada's and it would take a lot more doctors to cover all 300+ million people than we presently have. It is going to be hard to attract people into medicinal fields when the pay scale drops. More and more doctors in the US are dropping Medicare and Medicaid patients because the government is dropping the amount they pay for treatment and is so slow paying the bills. That sounds good to college kids that for the most part are not paying much tax yet but when the government starts taking 40% of your paycheck it gets old fast.
I want health care reform in the US but not government controlled. The government has never shown it can run anything successfully here.
BTW just to note after the US athletes I root for Canada next in the Olympics.

yes i understand what socialism is. it has NOTHING to do with Canada, period. it has to do with a 2,700 page health care bill in our congress. things here run differently. you have a parliment. we have a congress.
2,700 hundred pages. you going to read it? our own politicans did not even read it!

Wow, great question. Our American cousins sure seem confused, especially ZZsleepur.
Imagine, the idea that we don't actually have an active Socialist Party somehow makes us Socialist.
Holy crap. We have a Liberal, A Conservative and the New Democratic Party sharing power in a monarchist parliamentary democracy.

However you did get a few fair answers. Mostly they were the ones that said it was because they just use "Socialist" as a kind of insult.
The ones that said they new nothing about our politics were good too.
As always the real right-wingers managed to display astounding levels of ignorance.
