Why are people insecure about the number of FaceBook Friends they have

It seems like to be "popular" and "cool" you have to have at least 1,000 friends. I always find it funny because I know a bunch of people who have about 1,000 friends and it's always close to that number lmao, so do they add people they don't know just so that other people will perceive them to be popular?

Because they have no life.

Facebook was originally made to be able to find/keep in contact with people who maybe live further away. However, it has lately turned more into Instagram or Twitter or Tumblr; people want to have more followers and be perceived as a popular person, even if they're just an average person.
