People say advertising plays a part, but i heard somewhere that these sites are worth billions ? is all the money coming from advertising ?

Yes it is true because it has millions of members also. They can earn through advertising. Because of the fact that their site is very popular many businessmen also would like to advertise to them. In return those businessmen will pay for that advertise.

Yes, Dont be surprised ? Being a the third largest populated country (if we consider facebook as a country). Pay Per Clicks, Pay Per View, Pay Per Impressions, Ads, banners, and commercials. Many other social networking sites will have so much information to sell, like contacts i.e mobile numbers, and email-ids to the companies looking for marketing. and lot many other ways to get going..

Besides banner ads on the site, they also sell your info. Yup. That's where they make the most money. Because the facebook personal information area has alot of different filters, hobbies, interests etc plus personal e-mail address (which is mandatory), it is a very useful tool for direct marketers. So, now that you do know that, keep minimal info. in there!
