Can I get in trouble for saying something racist on twitter towards someone? - Josh - 01-24-2013 08:00 AM

Ok so this dude thats an indian pissed me off and I said something pretty racist on the internet and now he screenshotted it and he says he can show the police and I looked up and it really doesnt look like he has anything the police would look at so I was just wondering if the police would do anything.

As long as you did not threaten him Your probably ok. I'd be careful with what you say employers these days actually cruise social media when hiring prospective employees. This kinda stuff can come back to haunt you.

No

You saying racist nonsense on the net isn't a criminal offense.

Unless of course, like many racists, you threatened to kill people, feeling secure in your alleged anonymity.

technically probably nothing could be pinned on you as long as you weren't doing threats, but honestly with all the anti-bullying hype going on and the emphasis on cyber-bullying, they will probably do something

it would not go to trial
they cant prove you said it and not someone else who got on your account
""Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." -US Constitution
It is not illegal to say racist things. It is illegal to commit actions against people out of racism, or to deny them opportunities because of their race/religion.
Most establishments (such as twitter) have rules of conduct against racist remarks and and can ban you or kick you out for such things. Nothing can be done if you didn't threaten him. Even if you did it'd be too hard to prove anything in court if you said it wasn't you.
Good thing we're American and have freedom of speech.

Yes, making racist comments is classed as Incitement to racial hatred which is illegal, your comments if they accused him of anything falsely can also be classed as libel as you have typed it in. If someone annoys you you should just ignore them and never reply as you will probably regret it after wards.

If he lives within the same town or state as you then the cops might say something. If the comments are sent be email or on a website then the network provider might revoke your access.

People have been sent to prison (in Europe) for making offensive comments online).
