Hi, I want to be a social worker, helping children and such . What kind of schooling do you need for that in New York State ? What schools in New York State offer this ? Thank you .

1. Earn a Bachelors degree in Social Work or Psychology
2. Earn a Masters degree in Social Work
3. Gain licensure as a social worker.

If you want to work for the state government, most states do hire individuals for entry level jobs with a Bachelors degree in Psychology or a Bachelors degree in Social Work. The New York State Office of Children and Family Services website http://ocfs.ny.gov/main/hr/jobtitlesAll.asp has some good information on job qualifications for the state. There doesn't look like there are too many state vacanies as far as children/family services with NY state. There are definitely jobs available in working with children and families in various settings, other than the state. If you are wanting to work perhaps in other settings, I think the Bachelor degree in Social Work will be more versatile for you and competitive in the job market. One reason is because as part of the BSW degree, there is an internship/practicum required, which gives you something to put down on your resume. Another reason is that some states in certain positions require degreed social workers for certain positions. At minimum, the BSW degree will get you entry level positions in working directly with children and families.
At some point if you decide to pursue a Masters degree in Social Work, if you do earn your BSW.....you can apply for one year accelerated MSW programs (which is what I did). Saved time and tuition! It was year round, but worth it in the long run. Otherwise, a regular full time MSW program will be around two years.
