it depends on which device and if you want to do any other thing with it.
Nook has advantage of you can read may books for an hours ad just as like the ones on the bookshelf.
with kindle KDP program you can get many more temporarily free kindle books
Nook also has the advantage that you can go into Barnes and Noble and try working Nooks.

In Best Buy you can touch a Kindle but the internet is neutered so you can't really try one.
So even if you decide to get kindle you should go and play with the Nooks to see if you like ebook readers.

you might want to consider Nexus 7 or iPad so that you can read both Nook and Kindle books using the Nook and Kindle app.
You might also want to look at the price of the book you wish to buy because if you read best sellers the price is sometimes more as ebook but indie books tend to cost less.

I like my nook tablet but I use it more for email and twitter than ebooks. It does not have enough free apps but I do like streaming my netflex account and stitcher from it.

I have I kindle3 and it is okay but I don't like it as much as my friend who only wants to read ebooks
I wish someone had working versions of the new Kindle fire HD so I could see how it compares with my nook tablet
