Can you invest in the stock market without an SS? - Ryu - 01-27-2013 11:19 PM

If you are living in the united states, can you invest in the stock market without an SS number?

Can you use a TIN or a business ID number instead?

More inputs appreciated, thanks

honestly i'm not really sure.
But you should try to sign up to a website such as
http://www.tradeking.com

it is free, and if you can register to it, you can trade stocks. I'm not sure if they really need your SS (social security #) you should call and ask though.

And now, this is not an advertising....

Willie,
If you don't have a social security number, you can apply using form SS-5. I've put a link below.

To answer your question, IRS requires you to have a social security number, because the interest and dividends your earn as well as your proceeds on sale of investments are reported to IRS by your social security number.
