I'm kind of new to Twitter.... say someone replies to one of my tweets, I used to get an email notifying me of this. However, this was annoying me, so I turned it off. Does twitter have a similar system to facebook where a little notification pops up or similar? If not, how do I know if someone's tagged me or whatever?
I don't have a smartphone so they can't send me push messages or whatever

You can set up your phone to receive text alerts.

No. You'd have to check your @ mentions frequently. Just turn it back on, that's your only way of knowing.
