when you reply to someones tweet is there any way that you can do it so its between you and the person your replying too ?
as i wouldnt use twitter so everyone could know my business.

yes, just put a " d " in front of that person's name instead of an " @ " and it will be a private message between the two of you.

If you send a direct message i don't think anyone another than the person your sending it to can read it. So i wouldn't really worry about it.
