I am connected to yahoo answers through my Facebook account. Does this mean that my friends can see my activity? I want to ask honest questions without my friends awkwardly spying on me.

Well, when u ask or answer a question Yahoo! gives u option on sharing it on Facebook or twitter or not sharing it at all (except on yahoo answers ofcourse)
so u shall uncheck the facebook one
Also u can disconnect you facebook from yahoo by editing your profile.
