What type of stocks would be good to invest in? - Justin Lanton - 01-30-2013 05:36 AM

I had a family member pass and I got a large sum of money. I would like to invest in some stocks with some of the money. What are some good shares out there to go into? (NO Facebook!)

If you have to ask, you shouldn't be buying stocks. Put your money into index funds that track the major stock indices or spread it out in no-load mutual funds that focus on a variety of market sectors. While you're figuring out which ones of those to get into, put your money in short term certificates of deposit (CDs) or treasury bills for safety.

Get some financial advise would probably be your best bet. There are companies out there that pay dividends greater than the interest paid by a bank such as GlaxoSmithKline which I think pay a dividend equal to over 5% of investment.
In todays unsettled market GSK or such would be perhaps the safest choice, its all well and good speculating in stocks but one must be aware of future events such as Greece leaving the Euro which will cause the markets to fall and eventually bounce back and its the bounce we all try to catch.

Facebook definitely not, now the underwriters support is gone FB is going down.
