i have no idea what i'm doing. Should i just follow a bunch of people because no one will know my profile otherwise.

Twitter isn't much use if you don't know people to follow beforehand.
If you do know people that have Twitter accounts though, feel free to follow them to keep track of how they're doing.

use trending topics in some of your tweets, so people will see it when they search those topics
