Because they have a BAD case when it comes to reality.
Republicans have a LOT of explaining on why we should elect a Repub president after their party controlled America for nearly 8 years and THIS is where we got.
McCain says he doesn't understand the economy, he thinks the fundamentals of the economy are strong right now, his former economics mentor (gramm) was of the belief that the recession was "in our heads," and he thinks the middle class goes up to $5 million/year in income. WTF...
And all this while THE ECONOMY is the #1 issue in America right now. Talk about McCain being the WRONG CHOICE.

Sage said it all: "That's what the Republicans do". What's funny is that they deny doing it in this answer, but don't respond with any comment on an issue of their own - as if they disprove their own point.
Then, there is the usual 'experience' argument. As if they agree with him on the issues but can't vote for him because he lacks experience! He has more political experience than Ronald Reagan and George Bush, and of course Arnold Schwarzenegger (why does yahoo have Schwarzenegger in the dictionary but not Obama?). And of course less then Johnson, Nixon and other famous horrible presidents.

Because in all honesty those issues have sprung up during a Republican administration and the realize that they it may reflect badly on them. Personnel attacks are very effective for both parties. I wish I could say Americans are smart enough to realize that what someone did in high school is not important. Yet this is a country in which more people vote for the next American Idol than the next President.

Perhaps it is because Obama hasn't given us any real substantive view points on the current events. It's very hard to tell where he really stands.
Furthermore, Obama refused the best opportunity he had to convey his views (if he had any) when he refused to participate in the Town Meetings.

My answer is that you should look at character. Current events and issues change. Character is the measure of how a candidate will respond to now unknown future issues.
