I only seem to be getting direct mail alerts through my email address. Also, how do I view my messages on my twitter account? As when I click messages, there is just a box to type a message to someone, and it doesn't show previously received direct mail, in which to reply to.

Under your account if you look on the right and side there is a sideBar that is titled Direct Messages. You are able to view both received and sent messages through that link. Hope this was helpful.
