Native speakers who are good with grammar, could you help me, please? - Tomo - 02-03-2013 08:24 AM

Q1.Could you tell me this sentence meaning, please? Especially I don't understand 'dumbs down' means.

As a result academic writing and journalism *dumbs down it's language to reach a larger audience.

Q2.Could you tell me why they wrote 'on what' not ' where', please?

Facebook has not yet announced when or *on what exchange it will start selling its stock.

Please respond.

Q1: They are trying to say that academic writing and journalism uses language that is easier for people like you to understand it. They are not saying you're dumb. It's basically just saying they are using easier words and such that even "dumb" people can understand it, and their works will be read and understand by a larger group of people, not just smart ones.

Q1) it simply means that the author uses simple language so they can reach a larger audience.

Q2) this explanation could get into a lot of "stock speech" but, simply put it, they're not sure if they are going to sell their stock on what markets.

Hope that helpsSmile
