What happens to your online accounts if you die? - Tiffany - 02-03-2013 09:48 AM

Well, I have a Facebook, Twitter, Formspring, and Yahoo account...and I was just wondering last night what happens to them if you die..Does someone delete it or is it just there or do you ask someone to update it for you?? What do you guys think?

I think it's just there!

They sit there until the site goes down or there is a purge.

Some expire after a very long time

Well, nothing happens unless somebody logs into your account and deletes it.

It will sit there.
Sometimes your family can get access to the password and get on it as well..

After you die, you come back as a spirit and update your profile status to 'dead' and they automatically get deleted.

They just exist and become inactive. I heard a story on the radio a few years ago about somebody that was thinking of launching a business to delete your online identity if you died, but I don't know if it went anywhere. If you are leaving final instructions, you might leave those with a will and ask a close friend to delete them for you.

A coworker of mine died a year ago and he's still listed as a Facebook friend. It's sort of strange.
