Most effective ways to create social change? - dadong72 - 02-13-2013 05:42 PM

Hello,

In general I was wondering what are the biggest ways to create change in the world.

Obviously politics would be my assumed number 1 because that is part of its function and it is therefore largely outside of the economic 'system'. Other direct methods I can think of are business, education, and revolution.

Indirect ones are things like music, media, sports, etc.

Am I missing many and how effectively do you think someone can generate value or social change at either a global or regional level?

Don't forget the unifying effect of natural disasters. They may not be what you mean, but they do change social behavior. Also, war tends to change social behavior too. As does migration,[whether 'Im' or 'Em'],and changing financial fortune. Increasing awareness of the rest of the world's population, and their grievances and alliances, also tends to change a persons views, and behavior toward, outside influences on their lives. I disagree that politicians lead nobly toward beneficial change-they may ENFORCE it,such as equality laws,p/c-ness,etc,but an enforced law by definition is not a change in behaviour by choice or education,it's a change by governmental enforcement. Such enforcement leads to resentment, and resentment leads to non compliance, and in extemis, revolution. That isn't social change-that's social decay. Beware the smiling politician!!
