Do you get an email? or does it appear anywhere on the homepage?

No, you will not receive an email.
You will see the tweet in your homepageonly if you are following the user who has sent it.
To check who has mentioned you in a tweet (@+username), in your Twitter homepage, in the right part of the page click on "@yourusername" ( http://twitter.com/#replies ).
