I've heard that facebook gives an alternate way to log in by sending your email a link that takes you directly to your facebook page without having to use your password. Is this possible?

It's possible, but unlikely for security reasons. Any email you get that gives you an alternative address to log in is a phishing email designed to steal your login details, and ultimately your account, if not your identity as well. Stay well away from these.
