I manage a very popular website called Articles About Men, which is an article directory that has significant Google search traffic and tens of thousands of backlinks from thousands of other prestigious websites, including a bevvy of social media sites and services.
Where would I be able to get in touch with private advertisers who would be interested in advertising on this website?

Some connections are made on internet marketing forums a search would turn up,
Some deals are struck after an advertiser has experienced good ad performance of ads they have run on your site through an ad network, like the Google Adwords network. They will approach a webmaster about cutting out the middleman.
If you want to have fewer headaches you might just let one of the many ad networks fill your space.

Some suggestions
1 - Make sure you've got an Advertise with Us page in your site with as much information as you can to help entice advertisers
2 - Prepare a media kit. Make it easy for these advertisers to buy ads from you
3 - Use advertising marketplaces. Examples are
