It was a small group of German intellectuals who all died over 200 years ago.
It is also the imaginary focus of conspiracy theories. It is very useful in separating idiots from normal humans. Idiots think there is an illuminati organization in existence today. Normal humans don't.

The illuminati was a social order in what is modern day Bavaria (a region of Germany) that was dedicated to spreading the ideals of the enlightenment. The illuminati was falsely interpreted by the paranoid Elector-king of Bavaria to be a group of spies or rebels acting against him, and had it disbanded.
The media has, however, seized on them, instead portraying them as an Italian group of hyper intelligent antichristal terrorists.

In short, the Illuminati is a group that originated in the United Kingdom that believe in no Government and no organized religion. They believe in a New World Order (NWO) in that all countries will become one nation. Then there is a creepy side to the story about demon worship and aliens. Which I don't want to get into right now.
