Facebook, Google, any of the web-based telephone books, http://www.zabasearch.com
In Google, use quotes and try variations:
"Thomas Alva Edison"
"Edison, Thomas Alva"
"Tommy Edison"
etc.
zabasearch will show you a little, which may be enough, and offer to show you more for a fee. So will some of the web-based phone books. Some of the Google hits will be advertisements for fee sites. Look for "Ad" in very small letters.

If you mean people who are currently alive, you might try Google/ If you are talking about genealogical research Familysearch.org is connected to the largest genealogy library in the world and is free
