I'm looking to advertise my website directory, and would like to post my ad on a website or websites that offer free ad placement that everyone in the U.S. can see.

I like http://www.swaptrain.com. Its got awesome features compared to other classifieds sites and its free. Be sure to use the "share" buttons to let your facebook, myspace and twitter buddies know about your ad as well! Thats one feature that helped me sell my cargo trailer.
