question about smart TVs? - Jack - 02-26-2013 10:31 AM

can you browse the internet with a smart widescreen TV?

Depends. Some can, yes, check the specs!!

Others, for example some mid-range Samsung's, can't. But then, I'm guessing you already have access to the internet right Wink

Hi Jack, LG WRman Greg here,

It depends on the brand and the model of the TV but most smart TVs these days have a browser built into them so you can go on the internet on the TV with ease. For smart TVs, some are WiFi-ready which means you can connect the TV to your home WiFi network and others have WiFi built-in, meaning you can go to the internet right away as the TV's already equipped with internet access. You can use smart TVs to browse around the internet as well as view online contents through specialized apps such as Youtube, Facebook, etc. You should consult each brand's website and visit the model's individual page to check if it has this function or not. Information on smart TVs from LG, for example, can easily be found here: http://www.lg.com/us/smart-tvs. All of these have the internet capability, the LM-series models are especially great.

LG WRman Greg out!

Some can like the recent LG models.

But ... your computer browser gets updated every few weeks because there are HUGE variations in web sites. Some use HTML2, some HTML4 and some HTML5. There is Javascript versions, Flash versions, Quicksilver, etc.

TV makers .. do not want to be in the browser or firmware update business. Chances are there are many websites you cannot visit with a TV.

Add to the fact that trying to read email/facebook/anything from across the room sucks. And you really need a full keyboard and mouse, ... the list goes on and on why it is a bad idea.

Want to surf the web while watching TV? Get a $250 Chromebook. Works much better.
