I've heard that it's free to download but then I've heard that you have to pay about $5 to download it. So which one is it?

It is free to connect your wii to the internet. There are charges for game you purchase. But you have to use your existing internet connection to connect with a wii.

Yeah it's all free. thats why, Xbox 360 And PS3 are still trying to beat the wii.

No, you do NOT have to pay for internet on the wii. Downloading the internet channel used to cost $5, but now it's completely FREE! With the internet channel, you can do a few things like: tweet on twitter, check if your farmville animals are still alive on facebook, watch kids get owned by trampolines on youtube, AND MORE!
What else is free on the wii? Here's what's free.
- Using the Forecast Channel
- Using the News Channel
- Using Nintendo Channel*
- Using the "Check Mii Out" Channel*
- Using online multi-player
- Sending messages to friends
- Downloading game demos*
