Where would you go for a nice casual Sunday lunch in Atlanta.? - mccoyblues - 02-28-2013 02:46 PM

I want to take someone special out for a nice casual Sunday afternoon lunch in the downtown, midtown, buckhead area. Maybe someplace unique and interesting, something with a view or a nice neighborhood to walk in after our meal. Nothing super expensive but the food has to be first rate. Where would you go for a Sunday afternoon out with a special friend.

I don't spend a lot of time in Atlanta, but the South City Kitchen is pretty good in midtown: http://www.southcitykitchen.com/midtown/index.htm

Hi McCoy: When I'm in a quandry about where to eat, I look at Yelp, which is generally pretty helpful. (Being the quirky person that I can sometimes be, I also write reviews about most of the restaurants we go to. My 'nom de plume' is Meredith R.)

I suspect my suggestions won't be what you're looking for... but I love to go to lunch on Buford Highway. Little Szechuan for Chinese, Penang for Malaysian. Afterwards we often stroll around the Asian supermarkets or get coffee at Cafe Mozart. (Interesting pastries, including one with string beans and another with a hot dog!)

The most impressive place I've been for brunch is at the Ritz -- but that's ridiculously priced. There's also 57th Fighter Group on Clairmont @ $23, and Paschals for $25. If you're a fried chicken kiind of guy, the Colonade -- an Atlanta institution -- opens at 11:30 on Sundays. We browsed in some antique stores in the area after lunch.

I haven't eaten there in years, but there were some pretty good restaurants at Decatur Square. Or, if you just want a good burger, it's fun to walk in Little Five and go to the Vortex. Flip doesn't have much around it, but friends have said the burgers there are great. If you want really casual Mexican around Oakland Cemetery, Mi Barrio is authentic and good. The cemetery itself is really interesting to explore, particularly if you take a docent-led tour.

Hope you find something great! (BTW, there's a guy, Jim Stacy, who has had a couple of episodes of a show, "Get Delicious" on GPTV. Jim really knows local cuisine. If you're on Facebook, you might want to friend him under "Get Delicious." He's given me a couple of great recommendations.)
