I know one of the basic mechanisms is joint attention, which is directing attention towards an interacting partner.

I'm guessing that other mechanisms would be things like: imitation, genetic predisposition, environment, explicit mentalizing, societal regression, etc.

Is this academic or personal?

If academic I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help. Although I'll suggest various forms of media (TV, internet, phones, non-hi-tech visual artwork, radio) in addition to interpersonal interaction could be the answer you are looking for.

If personal, are you sure you aren't just really overthinking it?
