I am in charge of finding the best medium for building a recruiting website for about 30-35 hockey players. Basically, we would have a main landing page explaining the type of service we're providing with each player's profile page being a sub-page of the main page, similar to Facebook or LinkedIn.
I'd like it to have a simple, contemporary feel VERY similar to LinkedIn, because it will serve as a social networking avenue for these players. The significance is that I would first create ALL the profile pages with what we already have. But, once their pages are complete, we would like players to have the ability to go in and edit their "profile" with new pictures, changes in height and weight, etc.
I'm looking for a low-cost solution. We already have a website (that I don't manage) with a server and all that. I do not prefer HTML and would rather use a CMS or something like Drupal or Wordpress. Not a huge fan of Google Sites because of how unprofessional it looks without paying a designer. I don't have a LOT of time, so easy/quick setup is key.
If anyone can help me with this matter or can offer any advice, I would be greatly appreciative! Thanks in advance.
Also, if you can provide samples or links to sites that use this "networking" style, that would be a huge help!

Check out Joomla! with the Community Builder component and plug ins. Joomla itself is free, but the Community Builder has different price levels depending on the types of features you want.

Use wordpress with buddypress for the social networking side.
