One of my teachers asked a fellow high school classmates if they had been up all night "twittering". He's an older teacher so I guess he just heard about it in the media.
Anyone care to explain?

Twitter is a "microblogging" service that allows you to post updates to what you are doing at the moment to keep your friends informed.
The messages, called "tweets" are short, less than 140 characters, much like a text message, and are meant to be sent often.

You read short messages by people you consider write things you want to read
There really isn't much to it (which is to say that its beauty is in its simplicity, not that it is too limited to bother with).

Twitter is really just a status update place. If people like ur status they may follow you and then they can see when you update it

it's a really cool website where you can post your thoughts at any moment. It's pretty nifty~ Jim Gaffigan has one too.
