In marketing field there is no permanent jobs. if you achieved your target then good otherwise you fire?
SMM is part of SEO. SEO is very huge thing like smm, smo,ppc,retargeting, remarketing.if you interest this jobs i suggest you move on SEO.

As mentioned by the others, nothing is really permanent especially when you are talking about online marketing. Rules change very often so does your profit. However, both SEO and SMM are good choices. You can actually combine the two. They are a bit directed to a similar path.

SEO and SMM are interrelated to each other. When it comes to permanency, what makes to stick to any field is your determination and passion. The recent Google updates makes any SEO professional's work a lot tougher but still the internet marketing still thrives. And with that, i can say that determination and passion fuels SEO professionals to go further and creating post-Penguin technique to be at the top.
