Wrong question: Not a lot of the Internet is social media, but a lot of Internet traffic is from social media.

Explanation: one video streamed from youtube is equivalent to thousands and thousands of facebook messages.... So in percent of weight, size, the internet is mostly medias (videos, images, etc). The traffic is another thing completely.

Official numbers can be found using your friend Google!

Not sure there is a percentage, but here are some facts for you from 2011:

YouTube has 490 million unique visitors every month
Twitter has over 24 million visitors every month and over 500 million tweets a day
Facebook is the second most popular website in the world (behind Google)
1 in 9 People on Earth are on Facebook (avg 15 hours 33 minutes per month)
Over 250 million people access Facebook through mobile devices
30 billion pieces of content is shared through Facebook every month
Flickr hosts 5 billion images
Google + has over 25 million users and was the fastest to reach 10 million users (it took 16 days, Twitter took 780 days and Facebook took 852 days)

Hi,

I think that nowadays about 45 percent of the Internet is made up of Social Media. It's so as Social Media is made up of many types of websites. They are Photo Sharing Sites like Flickr and Photobucket. Then there are video sharing sites like Yahoo Video and YouTube. Then there are social networking sites like Google+, Corlif and Tumblr. All the Best for your Social Networking & Media Paper.
