How can you trace someone's IP address from Facebook? - Tony - 03-26-2013 10:41 AM

My Grandmother just got her first computer this year. This Man found her on Facebook and blah blah blah. He's been asking for money and stuff. I think, scratch that, I KNOW that he's a con man. He claims to be in the army in Nigeria. I want to trace his IP and use it to find out where he actually is. If that doesent work, I need to try to find more evidence to prove to my grandmother he's a con man. Help? I don't know how to trace IP nor how to use it for Area tracking. My grandmother is blinded by fake love. Please help.

It's helpful to remember that IP addresses are so trivial to forge, and they don't reveal too much information anyway, that getting one is often of little use when someone is needing a confirmed identity behind it.

It's probably impossible. It might be possible to through a facebook game but you would likely get a facebook server IP address. Best bet would probably be to deal with the things on the social end.

The con will eventually ask your grandmother to send him money. You need to build your strategy around that. If it didn't happen yet, maybe try gain creadibility to predict his moves. I searched for something like "how do internet conmen work" in google, and got a ton of explainations. If you can step by step predict his moves towards your grandmother, maybe she will wise up.

Als try to inform the authorities. We have a computer crime unit over here, I'm not sure where you should go. Local police would be a start.

This is serious, she can be persuaded to give this man a lot of money leaving your granny ruined.
